When Steven and I moved into our house last August (I can't believe it's been practically a year since we bought it!) we didn't even do so much as put new paint on the walls. The house was flipped in 2010, so for the most part it was move in ready. The only room that really needed help was the bathroom. The color on the walls was a bright and hideous sea foam green color (it was much brighter in person than in the pictures!), the vanity and mirror were cheap and ugly, and the lighting looks like it stepped right out of the 1980s. It was bad. Not to mention, the lighting was not centered with the mirror and vanity.
Needless to say, the bathroom needed help since day one. When we moved in, however, we were more concerned with filling the house with furniture than we were with redecorating a bathroom. That combined with wedding planning and our crazy busy lifestyle left the bathroom untouched for almost a year. A couple of weekends ago, however, that changed.
With the help of my parents and our best friends, we remodeled our one and only bathroom in one weekend flat. Yes. This is the only bathroom in our house, and it is really small. Our house was built in the 1940s and apparently people didn't care for luxurious bathrooms back in the day.
Like any remodel, big or small, we ran into problems. Changing the light wasn't as easy as it should have been. Apparently there was a reason the old light was not centered to begin with. The electrical wiring was not centered behind it, and with the bathroom being so small, there was no way to center the vanity underneath it. The boys had to remove the electrical wire box, cut a hole in the center of the wall, place the wire box, and patch up the old hole.
Secondly, not only were the walls painted horrible sea foam green, but the underneath of the trim was also painted that color. We (and by we I mean my mom) basically had to repaint the trim. Talk about a huge pain in the ass!
Lastly, the door. I really wanted to move the door to the other side of the wall because the way it was originally swinging was wasting precious bathroom space, and believe me, we needed all the space we could get! This should have been an easy switch, but again remember, our house was built in the 1940s. The metal hinges were welded to the door frame. We bought a new door, but it was too big. Oh, and the entire door frame is steel, not wood. Basically our house is built to withhold anything short of the apocalypse, but it's nearly impossible to do simple tasks such as switch the door. My poor husband spent most of his weekend in front of that door doing everything short of blowing the damn thing down to make it work. In the end, he of course made it work! We still have to patch up the previous holes in the door frame and repaint it, but the hard part is done.
With the help of my interior designer, otherwise known as my mom, we changed the wall color to a more subtle color and bought all sorts of fun accessories to decorate. My favorite thing in the bathroom is definitely the artwork that is now hanging on the wall. We found it at Pier One, and as soon as we saw it, we knew that we had to have it. The rest of the accessories were purchased at either Pier One or Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
Our little weekend project that was supposed to take half a day to do was much more difficult than anticipated, but in the end, it was all worth it! I absolutely love it!
What do you think? Do you love it as much as I do? The bathroom went from a place that I avoided like the plague to a place that I actually love walking past. In fact, I took my very first bubble bath in that bathtub a couple of days ago!
Love it! Right now we only have one bathroom, too, and it's actually laid out very similar to yours. We are hoping to redo it one day - but with a wedding and whatnot it's getting put on hold. Nice job! :)
ReplyDeleteWow, how awesome! We are in the same boat... our master bath is SO small. It has an shower door that currently doesn't work, a huge soaking tub that takes up over half the bathroom, and was the same puke green color. Haha. Yours turned out so great, even with the road bumps :)
ReplyDeleteGirl, YEAH! Y'all rocked it. Boom! This is so inspiring. We have a similar mirror and lighting situation in our master bath. Can't wait to change it! xx
ReplyDeletegorgeous!!!! looks great!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great!! I love the color y'all choose for the walls!!
ReplyDeleteLooks great! That's one reason why I'm glad our house was built in the late 80's! We haven't really had to do much on the remodeling side. Also, I can't believe this is your only bathroom, props to ya'll for making that work!
ReplyDeleteI love it! Everything looks great! And I love love love that artwork. So pretty and different. That sucks that it wasn't quite as easy as it should have been, but it looks well worth it now!
ReplyDeleteOMG it's seriously so beautiful. I especially love the counter top!!! Great job :)
ReplyDeleteI love the way it turned out! Remodels never seem to come out as simple as you expect them to! I love all the artwork and all the little details of the room though!
ReplyDeleteLooks so great Morgan!!! It must feel so nice to have that done now!
ReplyDeleteThis looks awesome Morgan! It must feel so nice to have this done now!
ReplyDeleteI really love your bathroom. It looks so much more homey now.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! I love all the changes you made--everything looks great together! We live in an older home too (build in the 1950s), so our bathroom is small too...luckily we have another bathroom in the basement, but we use the upstairs one 95% of the time, so I feel your pain.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe y'all share that tiny bathroom...wow! What patience and time management skills you guys must have. The remodel looks awesome!
