I Hate Valentine's Day

2.11.2014

There . I said it. I'm really not a fan of Valentine's Day.
That may come off as surprising to some considering I like to get a little lovey dovey and mushy about my handsome fiance, but that's exactly the point. I want to do romantic things and give my fiance little surprises when he's least expecting it, not on a day where I am told that I have to. I want Steven to bring home flowers for me when he knows that I've had a rough day or need a little cheering up. I don't want him to feel forced to give me flowers because this commercialized holiday says that he has to do it. I want to go out to dinner on a romantic date night to celebrate our love and our relationship. I don't want to pay triple the price for some subpar meal just because society tells us that is what we are supposed to do on February 14th.

I just really don't like Valentine's Day.

I've had a few people ask me what Steven is giving me for Valentine's Day or what our big Valentine's Day plans are and my answer is simple. Nothing. Nothing out of the ordinary at least. I don't want Steven frantically searching for the perfectly romantic yet not cheesy gift to give me just because the general population says that he has to give me a gift. We have more important things to spend our money on these days. I mean he could go the easy route and just buy me a box of chocolates. However, if Steven came home with a box of chocolates anytime within the next 60 days I might just loose it because chocolate is most certainly not on the the wedding diet.
I will admit, however, I'm not a complete Valentine's Day scrooge. I do want to spend the day with my fiance (but not because a commercialized holiday tells us that we have to spend this particular day together). We are going to have a casual date night of pizza and beer. I mean seriously, what screams romance more than pizza and beer?! (note: pizza and beer is also not on the wedding diet, but I will make this one exception)

I'm also not a Valentine's Day scrooge when it comes to getting Valentine's Day mail. Last week I received not one but two sweet surprises in the mail. One was an adorable Valentine's Day card from Libby (can't we all agree that blogger mail is really the best kind of mail?!) and the other was a Date Night package from my amazing wedding coordinator complete with a movie and popcorn. So very sweet!
Oh, and I kind of really love that my dad has given me a dozen pink roses on Valentine's Day since the day I was born. He hasn't missed a Valentine's Day yet, and that includes the year he had to recruit one of my brother's friends to go buy and deliver the roses to me in Tuscaloosa because every flower shop he called was booked solid on delivers for the day.

See, my heart really isn't all that cold after all.

So while every other couple is gearing up for a day filled with oversized teddy bears and overpriced meals, Steven and I are gearing up for a Friday night much like most of our Friday nights. A casual dinner and then maybe a movie or something on Netflix. No champagne toasts, no cheesy romance lines, no Valentine's Day celebrations.

Happy Anti-Valentines Day!

  1. Our Valentine's day plans always consist of eating BW3s wings and potato wedges, drinking beer and watching a movie at home. So basically exactly what we would be doing on a normal day...

  2. I totally get it! This year our Valentine's plans consist of cooking dinner together and watching movies at home. I would much rather avoid the crowds and don't see the point to the extravagant gifts. I just really want to spend time with my boyfriend. That's enough.

  3. I totally agree!! Sometimes I go buy cards and just leave them for Mike to find on any random day. It keeps it romantic even on days when you aren't forced to be romantic. We do do something special for Valentine's Day but he doesn't buy me anything and I don't get him anything. We spend the evening together in a hotel room with a jacuzzi tub in the bedroom *wink, wink* and we have a nice dinner. It's a V-Day special that this hotel does every year and we head to the beach when we have the money and spend the evening together. We don't do anything out of the ordinary. Buy vodka and a redbox and watch movies. lol. But that's it.

  4. Hahaha! See?! I agree. This is what commercialism has done to this poor holiday! Haha! I'm with you though.... romantic comedies, beer, and Five Guys is on the menu for us this Friday!

  5. I will be doing the same thing as you on Friday night! I do love holidays thought, so I might sneak in some chocolate ands a corny card for my fiance. I'm like you though, chocolate is definitely not part of the wedding diet right now. That is SO cute that your dad gives you a dozen pink roses every year!

  6. We don't have crazy romantic plans either!! We noticed last night that a band Ross loves is going to be in town and are using that as our "V-Day Date" hahaha :)

  7. I love reading how people feel about this holiday! So many varied responses haha. I think the best way to spend it is how you're doing it, a casual date. Have fun!

  8. Ha! I love the snacks that come with Valentine's Day! But my hips don't... I've never done anything special for Valentine's Day. You'll find us on our couch watching a movie. Go us. :)

  9. We are the exact same way. I am not a fan of Valentines Day for the very same reasons! Now, I can get down with some vday décor...who doesn't love hearts and pink sparkly things?! I made Chris homemade lasagna every year. I bought cute vday wine glasses that say be mine our very first vday together and I whip them out every year and we have some wine with our lasagna. We never go out. Last year and this year we aren't even doing presents...just cards. I am like you, I would rather have random surprises than something cheesy because you are supposed to!

  10. I agree with you, I've never really been a fan of Valentines. I don't wanna go out to dinner with everyone and their mom celebrating the same thing and see the crowds and pay ridiculous amounts of money on a small dish. We choose to keep it easy at home, and the past few years have celebrated a couples Valentines Day with two of our friends!

xo Hope your pizza and beer is amazee :) yum!

  11. I completely agree, my boyfriend and I are using Valentine's day as our "date night" for the month, we've been cutting back on nights out to save money. No flowers cause he doesn't want to waste money on something that won't last forever. I love Valentine's Day for only one reason... it was my grandparents favorite day. They got engaged on that day, and that was the only holiday my grandfather spoiled my grandma, flowers, HUGE box of chocolates, and a present, I also got a miniature version of her chocolates. It's special cause they made it special and that made it close to my heart so that's why I like it, not for the forced stuff and over priced dinners. ♥

xoxoox pizza and beer... awesome! ;)

  12. I am so with you. I am all about a night in versus sharing it with a million other couples. Takeout, a movie, and some wine is good enough for me.

  13. We try not to do too much on Valentines Day either. I like flowers from the hubby, but I don't want to see the bill that 5 times larger than normal just because its a specific date. And I'm so glad you liked your card. I just wanted to say thank you for making me smile and make coming to my blog every day one of my favorite parts of the day!

  14. Your dad is the sweetest! I'm totally with you on this. I will admit that I did celebrate Valentines Day last year, but it was because I had gotten engaged and it was the first year that I ever actually had a Valentine. But this year? Even though it's our first VDay married, he's working late and I'm just making some meatloaf. Haha. I totally agree with everything you said. Except about the chocolate. Bring me all the chocolate.

  17. I love pizza! I can eat it several times a week! So that sounds like a great date night to me. And I feel exactly as you do about buying gifts for significant others -- esp around Valentines and Christmas. I like to go all out for Birthdays and now Fathers Day.

  18. I'm not a huge fan of Valentine's Day either. It's over priced, over crowded, & overrated. I too like doing little things all year round not just because it's VDay.
