Two Years Later

6.20.2014

Two years ago, in a bar in downtown Birmingham, I met the man of my dreams. On June 22, 2012 we went on our first date, and exactly two years later here we are, newlyweds in love and living out our own real life version of happily ever after.

I remember every detail about our first date. It was actually more of an "impromptu" date than anything. Like the perfect gentleman that my husband is, he asked me out on a formal date for the Saturday after we met, but after hours upon hours of texting back and forth, we realized that we didn't want to wait until Saturday for our date. We decided instead to meet up that very evening after work for drinks at a popular Birmingham restaurant. I was ecstatic! I had butterflies in my stomach all afternoon in anticipation for our date that evening. I had a good feeling about this one.
The one and only problem about an impromptu first date after work was that I didn't have time to change clothes beforehand, so I showed up for our very first date wearing bright purple pants that I had worn to work (I know what you're thinking. "Who wears purple pants to work?" The thing is, I was a nanny at the time. I spent the majority of my day on the playground covered in bananas and apple juice. Purple pants were perfectly acceptable). Lucky for me though, I did find of pair of wedges lying in the backseat of my car, so I strapped them on, freshened up my makeup, and embraced the purple the best way I knew how.

Steven asked me to meet him on the top level of the parking deck outside of the restaurant where we were meeting. My overly-cautious self, however, didn't care to do that. I had just met this guy a few days prior at a bar. No way was I meeting him alone in a parking deck (that's where kidnaps happen, you know!)! Little did I know at the time, but he only asked to meet me there because he had a dozen pink roses in his car waiting for me and he didn't want to embarrass me by bringing them into the restaurant. Sorry for ruining that little surprise, honey!

Instead of meeting him inside the parking deck, I told him that I had found a closer parking spot and that I was waiting for him inside. We found a table outside where we sat and talked for hours. We drank beer and took in the amazing city view all the while getting to know each other. I think I knew more about Steven after our first date than I did during my whole relationship with most other guys I dated. It was amazing!

After several hours and a few beers we decided to leave and go somewhere for dinner (yes, we left the restaurant where we already had a table to go to a whole other restaurant to eat. I have no idea why we decided to do this, but we just did). We had dinner, talked more, and put off saying our "good nights" as long as possible. It was the kind of date that you never want to end.

Unfortunately, it did end. We parted ways for the night only to stay up way too late texting each other. We also decided to keep our original date, so the following night we got to do it all over again! We were already smitten about each other.

We continued our date nights every single night for the next week or so (probably longer). It didn't take long to realize that this was the real deal. We were on the fast track to love.

So I guess this is where they say...

The rest is history!

  16. I love stories like this. Its pretty much exactly how my husband & I were. We met out with friends went on a date immediately after and have been inseparable every since. That is pretty hilar about ruining the surprise roses. I don't blame you though! I've watched way too many datelines myself!
