I Don't Discuss Politics

2.09.2015

If you only know me because you read my blog, then you wouldn't know how much I love politics and all the debate that surrounds it. You wouldn't know that my high school government teacher left a mark on my life that led me to studying politics in college. Nor would you know that I grew up in a family that shared my love of politics, but who had very split views on the matter. You wouldn't know that most nights our talks around the dinner table revolved around Republican views versus Democratic views. You wouldn't know that I bite my tongue nearly everyday because I live in a state and work in an industry that doesn't necessarily share my view in politics. Most importantly, you wouldn't know how proud I am of Alabama for finally passing a law that allows couples of any sex marry one another. If you only know me through my blog and my blog alone, you wouldn't know any of this.

So why is it that I, someone who is known to be outspoken and has so much passion in my heart for politics, have been avoiding the subject like the plague on this blog of mine for nearly two years now?

I honestly don't have an answer for that.

Living in Alabama, my social views are of the minority. That being said, there are plenty of instances where I can't, or at least I shouldn't, just speak blindly about my views and beliefs. Unfortunately, I think that mentality has carried over into my writing. That stops now. There is no reason that I can not or should not speak my mind here. It is, after all, my blog.

Starting today I vow to let my guard down and speak freely about a subject that means so much to me. I vow to write about the good, the bad, and even the ugly side of politics. I vow to share my views on the matters that mean so much to me, like maternity and paternity leave, equal pay for women, and healthcare reform, and I vow to share my views on the tough controversial subjects, like abortion and gay marriage.

Speaking of Gay marriage, It makes me so happy to know that Alabama has finally struck down a ban on gay marriage. Beginning today, men and women from all walks of life and sexual orientation are finally free to marry. #EqualityForAll

ALABAMA – On Jan. 23, 2015, US District Court Judge Callie Granade struck down Alabama's gay marriage ban as unconstitutional. Judge Granade stayed her ruling for 14 days to give the state time to appeal the decision to the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals. On Feb. 3, 2015 the Court denied the state's request to extend the stay, clearing the way for gay couples to begin marrying on Feb. 9. The Alabama Attorney General's Office said it would seek intervention from the US Supreme Court. {{source}}
Welcome to the 21st century, Alabama. Progress looks good on you!

  3. Politics is a huge part of my life and has been for as long as I can remember...I couldn't imagine not ranting/discussing politics on my blog every now and again, so I'm glad you've decided to do the same!

  5. Morgan, I cannot tell you how excited I am to hear that you will now be engaging in a dialogue regarding politics here on your blog. This post was so inspiring; it is amazing that you are willing to step out of your comfort zone and reveal more of yourself as a person. There is little I love more than reading, writing, and discussing politics and history. My views are also in the minority sometimes. I used to be (I repeat used to be) a strong conservative, and on some issues, I remain so. But, the world needs a change and that's why I side with Liberals on a lot of issues at the forefront right now. Especially social justice issues. I look forward to reading more posts like this, girl!

  6. I am so overjoyed watching the live feeds of everyone getting married! Politics are tricky to discuss and there will always be people who disagree, but good on you for expressing yourself and not worrying about opposing sides :)

  8. I totally understand where you're coming from. I live in Kansas which is probably the worst run, hot mess of a state there is. Oh, and it's in the middle of the bible belt. Awesome.

  9. This post made me so happy. I live in California which is overall pretty open minded, except the town I live in. I view things the same was as you and so does my family but we are for sure the very unpopular opinion. So great for Alabama!

  10. Politics are a huge part of my life and I live in a state where my views are often the majority. I can't even imagine how hard it would be to live in a place where my views are so polarized and different to the point I almost fear. I am excited to hear more of your views on the blog! I woke up this morning to the news that Alabama was the 37th state to legalize gay marriage and I was so happy! Well, after I got over my shock a bit at it being Alabama but good for progress.

  11. I remember the night that Chris and I had dinner with you guys and learned that you and Steven were not only a divided house in football, but in politics as well! I personally love to hear people from all walks of life and both sides of the fence talk about what they believe and see things from their side of view. Whether we agree or not doesn't mean that we can't be friends. I never understood why people have to be so ignorant when it comes to politics. Or why people don't research facts for themselves instead of just going with something. But I am ranting here....Today is a big day for Alabama.

  12. Great post Morgan. I don't like anything about politics but it is a part of our society. I am appalled at the actions of the the Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore, and those counties whose probate judges have determined not to issue a y marriage licenses. You should write more posts like this one.

  14. Good for you, and good for Alabama! Politics can be such a controversial thing to discuss, but that's because it MATTERS. It matters so much. As bloggers, we can only hope to inspire and educate our readers. Why not do it for something that matters?

  15. This is awesome! I'm very politically opinionated as well. I actually work in state politics! Despite that, I never talk about politics on my blog. I'm not sure why! I would definitely be nervous about how my readers would react. I look forward to reading more about it on your blog though!

  16. It's funny how you don't see many bloggers dare to bare their political views. I know how you feel being part of the minority. There are people in my office who openly bash my views without knowing it. I don't really ever speak up because to me, it's not worth the fight. I believe what I believe and they believe what they believe. But I have done a little political rambling on the blog... http://www.lifewithlolo.com/2014/11/lets-talk-politics.html

  17. YESSSSSSSSSSSSS. I am so, so happy today. Reading the hateful things others have said about it is so saddening to me. Letting people love who they want literally affects no one. I'm proud of our state today!
